Escalator Mishap Watch Your Step
One can read the many stories of freak accidents or mishaps about elevators and escalators on the internet Though useful for the general public, elevators and escalators can also prove to be very dangerous if they malfunction, misused or when one is wearing worn out footwear. When I was thirteen years old, I recall a close call with an escalator when I was shopping in a mall at one time. The mall had two separate floors which were accessible by escalator. I decided I wanted to go to the upper floor to check out all the stores. It was about half way up the escalator that the tip of my rubber soled sandal became partially caught on the edge of the moving stairwell. I sort of panicked as I could feel my shoe getting tighter as it was being pulled. It frightened me as I was trying to pull my foot back to try and release the tip of my sandal. It didn't budge and it was still being pulled tighter as the stairwell came closer to the top of the exit of the escalator. I decided at that point I would probably have to remove my foot from the shoe and let the it go. Somehow, though in a matter of seconds my shoe was released from the edge of the moving stairwell. I was relieved and quickly made my way off the escalator once the moving stair came to the top floor. I took a closer look at my sandal and realized that the sole was breaking from the shoe and that is why it was caught in the escalator stairway in the first place. Lesson here is to be careful what footwear you are wearing when you cross an escalator. Worn out and damaged footwear could be hazardous to your health if you don't watch your step when using an escalator.
