Tinker Tinker Little Star

As a child I grew up in a pet friendly family. Each one of these cats and dogs had their own unique personality and they would usually attach themselves to the children in the family. Some animals were strays who would stumble across our home and stayed. It was not hard to become attached to each cat or dog that came as part of the family home.
I remember one such little dog that had been given by friends. I was only about eight or nine at the given time. As I remember ,this particular dog was very small. She was a small brown terrier type dog who possessed big dark sad eyes. Her name was Tinker. One day we moved to a new home. This house was near a fairly busy road where vehicles travelled fairly quickly. It was one late afternoon I was standing on the front porch of the house. I recall Tinker exploring around the bushes and grass on the other side of the road. Tinker had a habit of racing back across the street when she would see a car coming, almost as if it was a game to her like she was trying to play “beat the car.” She would normally make it but on this day she did not. It happened so quickly but what I witnessed seemed to play slow motion in my young mind. There was this horrible yelp and then I saw Tinker roll across the road from underneath the vehicle. The driver did not stop. I yelled out and told my mom that Tinker had been hit by a car.
My parents came running out and my father went and retrieved Tinker who was lying lifeless in the middle of the road. Tinkers big sad eyes were still wide open. I felt shocked and numbed and then I cried. This was one of the saddest days I experienced in my childhood that even today I can still see the ghostly images of this tragedy in my mind.
